Northern Metal Recycling takes environmental stewardship very seriously. The following case study illustrates this commitment put to practice.
The Challenge: For nearly sixty years, scrap metal recycling has been conducted at the eleven-acre American Iron facility in north Minneapolis. Over time, the unpaved yard had gradually accumulated a buildup of dirt and nonmetallic debris incidental with ongoing operations.
The bare soil surface was increasingly difficult to maintain, and some test samples showed trace amounts of petroleum residue and other soil-borne contaminants. Two barge loading docks were in need of major repair and the yard's close proximity to the Mississippi River made storm water runoff a potential area of concern.
The Response: Northern Metal Recycling initiated a comprehensive, facility-wide renovation program designed around these two key objectives: modernize plant operations and responsibly resolve the environmental issues specific to this site.
The Results: The project photos below cover a span of more than two years and document the significant investment of resources that were committed.
